Learn about airport advertising

As one of the advertising forms that help businesses elevate their brand status, airport advertising has recently become a “hot trend” for companies looking to reach high-end customers.

Tindi provides some information about airport advertising channels in the following article.

1. What is airport advertising?

Airport advertising refers to communication strategies implemented in airport areas in our country, such as Noi Bai International Airport, Tan Son Nhat Airport, and Da Nang Airport, and it is increasingly being expanded to more airports. This area sees hundreds of thousands of visitors each day who come to fly, pick up, or drop off family, friends, and partners, encompassing a diverse range of ages and professions, with the majority falling into the upper-middle-income segment and above.

Understanding the significant advantages of airports, various advertising formats have emerged, reflecting the creativity and continuous innovation of advertising agencies to meet the demands of numerous businesses.

2. The most effective airport advertising formats today

2.1. Billboard advertising (Pano, Billboard)

Pano-Billboard advertising is an outdoor communication format implemented in areas such as airport entrances, parking lots, and the front of the terminal. Pano and Billboard displays are significantly larger compared to other airport advertising formats, ranging from several dozen to several hundred square meters.

Here are some key characteristics to distinguish these two types of large displays:

Pano Advertising: This type of advertisement is mounted on the side wall of a building, constructed from sturdy metal frames and covered with Hiflex tarpaulin printed with the advertising design on the outside.

Billboard Advertising: This is implemented as a solid concrete pillar that supports the advertisement display above. The display can be rectangular or triangular to showcase advertisements on two or three sides, with Hiflex tarpaulin stretched on the outside.

Both types of advertising displays are equipped with high-power metal lights for nighttime illumination, making the brand image stand out and easily attracting the attention of passersby. Their large size ensures visibility from both a distance and up close.

2.2. DOOH digital screen advertising

When moving inside the airport, it is easy to see screens installed in prominent locations displaying images or TVC clips for various brands. Each broadcast, referred to as a “spot,” lasts between 15 and 30 seconds and can be aired approximately 120 times or more in a day, depending on the budget allocated by the business for that advertising campaign.

LED advertising screens are usually quite large, typically measuring several dozen square meters, and are installed at the reception desk, check-in areas, entrances (indoors), or in outdoor spaces such as parking lots.

LCD screens can be installed as horizontal displays on the wall, right in front of elevators, or as freestanding units in waiting areas, food courts, etc. They are usually available in two main sizes: 22 inches (530x350mm) and 32 inches (780x471mm).

Frame screens are primarily installed inside elevators in a vertical rectangle format, providing direct access to people using the elevator to move between floors. Frame screens also come in two main sizes: 19 inches (480x318mm) and 22 inches (530x350mm), displaying alternating image slides with a duration of about 12 seconds per spot.

Typically, airline passengers arrive at the airport quite early and stay for an extended period to complete check-in and wait. The images and clips advertised on LED, LCD, and Frame screens serve as effective entertainment tools, helping to pass the time and reach a wide audience effectively.

2.3. Lightbox advertising

Lightbox advertising is a common format found in many large airports, featuring various shapes and installed in high-traffic areas such as waiting lounges, baggage claim areas, and elevators.

Lightbox advertising is constructed from the following components: a rectangular metal frame, Hiflex tarpaulin (for outdoor displays), or Backlit tarpaulin (for indoor displays) printed with advertising images, and an internal lighting system to illuminate the advertisement from within. Typically, Backlit tarpaulin is used more frequently because it allows light to pass through better than Hiflex tarpaulin.

2.4. Advertising on luggage carts

Luggage carts are extremely essential for passengers arriving at the airport, as they can transport multiple heavy and bulky items simultaneously, helping users save significant time and effort. Airports usually have hundreds or thousands of luggage carts available to meet the needs of a large number of passengers, and inadvertently, these carts have become a highly intelligent and effective form of advertising.

The advertising images of businesses will be implemented as decals placed on the area just below the handle of the luggage cart, ensuring that they are within the line of sight of users while transporting their luggage at close range, and people moving around will also be able to see them.

2.5. Hanging banner advertising at the airport

Inside airports, hanging banners are often displayed in prominent areas such as the main lobby, walkways, and boarding areas to help brands promote their identity. The banners are suspended at a reasonable height, secured with metal frames and attached to the ceiling, allowing passengers to view them from various distances. Businesses can book a large number of hanging banners to increase brand visibility.

2.6. Advertising on charging stations at the airport

Charging stations are commonly installed in airports to help people charge their phones in emergencies or while waiting for extended periods. Businesses wishing to book advertising can display images on the screens of the charging stations, reaching viewers from close range, and even allowing passersby to observe them.

  • 80% of customers pay attention to airport advertisements, with 42% remembering them.
  • Enhance aesthetics and elevate brand prestige in a luxurious advertising environment.
  • Customers have a long exposure time to advertisements, making them unavoidable!
  • A large, diverse, and potentially wealthy customer base is reached.
  • Increase value and elevate the brand to an international level.

4. Some considerations when implementing an advertising campaign at the airport

Airports are large venues divided into various areas with different roles. Therefore, before launching an advertising campaign, businesses need to thoroughly research which areas have the highest foot traffic and identify the target customer segment to ensure effective execution and avoid wasting budget.

Due to the specific nature and location of the advertising, costs for airport advertising are generally higher than other forms. Businesses need to balance their advertising budget and select the appropriate format and timing to avoid overspending, which could impact the campaign’s effectiveness.

Lastly, an airport advertising campaign involves many complex steps, including obtaining permits, printing, and installation. This requires businesses to collaborate with a specialized airport advertising company.
