Advertising on taxis

Taxis are an indispensable means of public transportation in our lives. In addition to transporting passengers on demand, they also play a crucial role in brand advertising campaigns for businesses.

1. What is advertising on taxi?

Advertising on taxi is a form of low-profile outdoor advertising on vehicles, carried out simultaneously across a large number of cars. It has now expanded its reach to all 63 provinces and cities in the country. Most taxi companies today have participated in this advertising sector, as it helps protect the vehicles, generates a certain amount of revenue, and allows businesses to promote themselves effectively.

It’s not hard to understand why advertising on taxis is so popular and widely chosen, as it offers a variety of advertising placements, reasonable costs, and the ability to execute campaigns on as many vehicles as possible to increase market visibility for the brand. Additionally, the emergence of more and more new taxi companies in the market also drives the growth of this advertising format.

2. Advertising placements currently implemented on taxi

2.1 External advertising on taxi:

External advertising on taxis involves using advertising images printed on decals (glossy or matte) applied to the sides of the taxi. Currently, there are four common types of advertising on taxis: decals on the two rear doors, decals on both rear doors and the rear end (full rear), decals on all four doors, and decals on the taxi windows. Taxi advertising mainly features two types of vehicles: 4-seater taxis and 7-seater taxis.

2.11 – Advertising on the two rear doors of the taxi

This form of advertising involves placing advertising images on the two rear doors of the taxi. In 2015, this advertising format became very popular in Vietnam due to its novelty and visual appeal, along with its high effectiveness. The dimensions for this advertising format are 1000mm x 800mm for 4-seater taxis and 1100mm x 850mm for 7-seater taxis.

2.12 – Full rear advertising on taxi

This form of advertising has a larger advertising area compared to the advertising on the two rear doors, ranging from 1800mm x 900mm for 4-seater taxis to 2000mm x 950mm for 7-seater taxis. With a larger advertising space, it naturally makes a stronger impression.

2.13 – Advertising on all four doors of the taxi

Previously, the advertising format on all four doors of the taxi was not approved by taxi companies due to the logos of their brands being placed on the two front doors. However, due to customer demand and the boom in taxi advertising, companies have accepted this format. Currently, only Vinasun, Mai Linh, Open99, and Vinataxi taxis implement this type of advertising.

The notable advantage of this advertising format is that it is wide and visually appealing, making a strong impression on viewers.

2.14 – Advertising on the triangle windows

Although the area is relatively small, advertising placed on the triangle windows can still reach a certain number of customers. Advertising on the triangle windows effectively targets various audiences, such as pedestrians. This format is often combined with advertising on the doors to enhance its effectiveness.

2.15 – Advertising on the rear of the taxi

Advertising on the rear of the taxi (or the trunk lid) is an extremely effective form of taxi advertising. The rear of the taxi has a relatively small area but is positioned directly in the line of sight of pedestrians. A concise, visually appealing advertising message will attract the attention of those nearby. As a result, the products or services of the business will be deeply ingrained in the minds of customers.

2.2 Internal advertising on taxi:

Internal advertising on taxis includes several main types of advertising listed below:

2.21 – Advertising on the back of taxi seats

Although this form of advertising does not have an area as large as the previous types, it has the advantage of easily reaching customers who are traveling in the taxi.

2.22 –  Advertising on the LCD screen behind the front seats:

This is a modern form of advertising that offers deep interactivity inside the vehicle. All tablets fixed at eye level for passengers encourage interaction and allow them to scan products using their mobile phones.

  • The advertising list repeats every 10 minutes.
  • The volume and brightness are optimally adjusted for interaction based on the time of day.
  • Brands can display short advertisements (10–15 seconds) or create games, vouchers, samples, or conduct surveys after the ads to enhance customer interaction.

3. Why choose advertising on taxi

There are four key advantages we have identified from campaigns executed in practice:

First is the time and distance traveled: Taxis are a public transportation means that is not limited by operating hours or distance. This means that as long as passengers have a need to book a ride, they can use taxi services at any time.

This is also the greatest advantage of this advertising format, as the advertisement will appear on roads everywhere and at any time, especially during peak hours when there are even more people.

Second is the number of vehicles: For an effective promotional campaign, it should involve at least 100 vehicles to ensure wide market coverage. Additionally, businesses can choose to advertise simultaneously on multiple taxi companies.

Third is the taxi advertising maquette: Similar to advertising on buses or any other mode of transportation, taxi advertisements are printed on waterproof, tear-resistant decals, which are regularly maintained by the taxi drivers as well as the agency responsible for executing the campaign.

Fourth is the pricing for advertising on taxis: Businesses can book a large number of vehicles for advertising with a reasonable budget to reach consumers effectively.

4. Regulations for advertising on taxi

The regulations for advertising on taxis are clearly outlined in the Advertising Law, specifically in the section regarding advertising on vehicles in Article 32 of Law No. 16/2-12/QH13, which has been in effect since November 2013.

Content of Article 32 of the Advertising Law:

“1 – Advertising on vehicles must comply with the provisions of this Law and traffic laws.

2 – Advertising products must not be displayed on the front, rear, or roof of the vehicle. The advertising products must not exceed 50% of the permitted advertising area on each side of the vehicle. The display of logos, symbols, or emblems of the vehicle owner or taxi company on the vehicle must comply with traffic law regulations.”

Additionally, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Official Letter No. 2310/BVHTTDL-VHCS with the following content:

b) As of January 1, 2013, the requirement to issue licenses for advertising on boards, signs, banners, screens placed in public areas, luminous objects, aerial or underwater objects, vehicles, and other mobile objects has been abolished. This has been replaced by a procedure for receiving notification of advertising product content on advertising boards and banners. Therefore, according to the Advertising Law, there are no fees for the procedure of receiving notifications of advertising product content on advertising boards and banners.”

Thus, for advertising on taxis specifically and on vehicles in general, there is currently no need to obtain a license for advertising; however, it is still necessary to submit a “notification of advertising product content” to the local Department of Culture in order to implement the advertising.
